Who We Are

Joel Scherban and Chris Whitley have fond memories of playing hockey in Northwestern Ontario and have become deeply entrenched in the local hockey community.

Joel began playing hockey in Thunder Bay at the age of 4 years old in an outdoor league based at Carrick Park.  When he was 8 years old he moved to the Current River Mighty Mite league for his first experience playing in an indoor league.  He continued to play minor hockey in Thunder Bay with the Current River Comets, Volunteer Pool Bearcats, Elks 87’s, and the Thunder Bay Kings.

When Joel was 16 years old he began a five year career with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.  It was during his time in London that he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins.  After the completion of his Major Junior career Joel made the decision to forego his professional career in order to pursue academics and hockey at Lakehead University where he received an Honours Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Science in Management.

It was at Lakehead University where Joel, a five year Captain of the Thunderwolves, crossed paths with goalie Chris Whitley.

Chris was born and raised in Southern Ontario.  In 2004 after winning a National Junior A Championship, the Royal Bank Cup, Chris also decided to pursue academics and hockey at Lakehead University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Education Degree.

As teammates Joel and Chris achieved great individual and team success at Lakehead University.  Both were named OUA All-Stars multiple times, both were named CIS All-Canadians, both were named OUA MVP, and in 2005/06 they led the Thunderwolves to an OUA Queens Cup Championship and a National Silver Medal.

Since graduating from Lakehead University, both Joel and Chris have continued to demonstrate their passion for hockey in Northwestern Ontario.  Joel spent over three seasons as the Head Coach of Lakehead University and has been on the coaching staff of the Thunder Bay Kings.  Chris went on to a professional playing career in the American Hockey League, Central Hockey League, and British Elite League.  While Chris was playing professionally he always made a point of spending his summers in Thunder Bay and giving back to the hockey community through his work with various hockey organizations in the City.  Since retiring from professional hockey Chris has decided to make Thunder Bay his full-time residence and currently spends time coaching with the Thunder Bay Kings orginization.

Joel and Chris are grateful and appreciative of the support they received from the local hockey community as players in Northwestern Ontario and are excited to continue their involvement in local hockey, now as coaches looking to develop the next generation of Northwestern Ontario hockey players.
